The Southern Highlands Community Foundation announces Kerstin Schweth as the recipient of their first ‘Highlands Hero’ award.

The Southern Highlands Community Foundation (SHCF) announces Kerstin Schweth from Native Wildlife Rescue as the winner of their inaugural Highlands Heroes award.  Highlands Heroes is an award that recognises and rewards volunteers in our community who work tirelessly for their chosen cause.  Winners receive a $5000 grant for their organisation.

Kerstin Schweth founded Native Wildlife Rescue with her husband Woody in 2007.  For 16 years Kerstin has dedicated her life to caring for injured and orphaned wildlife in the Southern Highlands.  Animals are assessed, treated for injuries and cared for at the sanctuary until they are ready to be released.

Nicole Smith, Chair of the Southern Highlands Community Foundation said;

“We are thrilled to announce Kerstin as our first Highlands Hero.  Kerstin’s nomination was just incredible.  She works tirelessly and rarely gets the time to promote or talk about the amazing things she is doing.  She self-funds much of the care and expenses and manages the sanctuary with the help of volunteers since her husband passed away.  Kerstin is a true example of a Highlands Hero, a person whose work and unwavering commitment is so essential for our community”.

Though initiatives like Highlands Heroes the SHCF aims to highlight areas of need within our community and through the $5000 grant, have positive impact on the causes that our Highlands Heroes represent.

 Highlands Heroes nominations are open all year round.

Nominations being called from not-for-profit organisations operating in the Southern Highlands.  The judging panel is looking for volunteers who have contributed to the betterment of their organisation and/or its services and who have not sought recognition or acclamation.
