Helen Johnston

Highlands Hero, September 2024

Helen Johnston has been involved with the Bowral and District Art Society (BDAS) since she began taking painting classes in 2000.

As a volunteer and valued member of the BDAS community, she was asked to take on the role of Secretary fourteen years ago.

Helen is the essence of a quiet achiever, someone whose hard work and organisational skills behind the scenes is essential to the smooth running of an organisation like the BDAS.

“Helen gives so much of her time to the BDAS.  She is as a constant presence at the gallery, liaising with artists and admin staff on exhibitions, supporting the committee, working on fundraising events or welcoming students and visitors.   When I heard of Highlands Heroes I immediately thought of Helen and how nice it would be to help her gain some recognition for her efforts”.

The magic behind the scenes

Visitors to the BDAS gallery are often wowed by the quality of the six major exhibitions held each year as well as the range of classes available on site.  However, most aren’t aware that organisations like these exist because of the hard work and dedication of volunteers and members.  From supporting the smooth running of the committee structure to co-ordinating the exhibition calendar, reviewing submissions and the logistics of each exhibition, Helen’s calm presence and experienced hand is felt throughout.

“The reason I love being here is the people.  I’m meeting artists, people who visit to enjoy art, students, children and families and I take great pride in helping to show them all that the BDAS has to offer our community.”

“I’m a little overwhelmed to receive the award.” Helen says,

“There are so many organisations that have people working within them that are unsung, hard at work behind the scenes.  Their work is recognised by those who know but may be unknown to the rest of the community.  I hope my story can help to inspire others as I know that without volunteers, these wonderful places don’t exist.”

Highlands Heroes

Through the Highlands Heroes award, the Southern Highlands Community Foundation aims to recognise and reward the work of volunteers in our community.  Winners receive a $5000 grant for their organisation.

Helen plans to put the $5000 SHCF grant towards new lighting in the studio spaces which will enhance the experience of students at work.

Michael Sharp, SHCF Director said,

“The aim of Highlands Heroes is to recognise and reward volunteers in our community for the great work that they do.  Volunteers like Helen really are the glue that hold community organisations together, devoting so much of their time to making sure their organisation achieves great things.   We are thrilled to be able to recognise Helen’s dedication to the BDAS with this award, she is truly deserving of having her name in lights.”

The Bowral and District Art Society was established in 1949 as a not-for-profit community organisation to promote art in the Southern Highlands.  The BDAS has a full annual calendar of exhibitions as well as three studios providing daily classes and weekend workshops.  Supported by 500 members and a team of volunteers, the BDAS is a respected community organisations that relies solely on fundraising, grants and venue hire.  To find out more or to support the BDAS please visit https://www.bdasgallery.com
