The Southern Highlands Community Foundation (SHCF) and Bowral Art Gallery (BDAS) are thrilled to announce James Matthews as the inaugural recipient of the Creative Pathways Scholarship.

This new joint initiative has been established to support emerging artists living in the Southern Highlands, providing a meaningful platform for creative and professional development. As part of the scholarship, James will receive a year of mentorship from respected local artists Clara Adolphs and Martial Cosyn, alongside financial support and the opportunity to present a solo exhibition at BDAS Gallery in February next year.

The Creative Pathways Scholarship is designed to nurture artistic growth through a combination of mentorship, funding and professional exposure, culminating in a significant exhibition opportunity that connects artists with the broader community.

Emma Calver, Chair of the SHCF External Relations Committee, said:
“The Creative Pathways Scholarship is about far more than funding — it’s about the impact that mentorship can have on a young artist’s development, and the confidence and connections that come with it. The calibre of mentors we have in Clara and Martial present a significant opportunity for James to grow creatively and refine his practice. We’re thrilled to support an artist with such strong potential and to help nurture the next generation of talent in the Southern Highlands, connecting their work with a wider audience.”

Reflecting on the award, James Matthews said:
“Storytelling has always shaped how I understand and connect with the world and fine art is central to my creative identity.  It’s a place I return to refine my practice and reconnect with the fundamentals of making and creating images. I’m excited by the opportunity ahead, especially to work with Clara and Martial, and to build a body of work for exhibition next year.”

The scholarship marks an exciting new chapter for emerging artists in the region, strengthening pathways for creative talent to thrive locally while gaining valuable industry experience and exposure.

James’s exhibition will be in February 2027 and we look forward to keeping you updated over the next year.
