Peter Doris
Highlands Hero, September 2025
After three decades of quiet dedication at St Vincent de Paul, Peter Doris has distinguished himself as a remarkable leader, fostering unity among members and responding to the evolving needs of the community.
Peter’s association with St Vincent de Paul began in 1995, when he began volunteering to give something back to the community and help those in need. Throughout his tenure, Peter has held many volunteer roles in Conference (the welfare side of St Vincent de Paul, characterised by a group of volunteers specific to one locale), and is currently President of the Wollongong Central Council. In this position, Peter provides leadership to over 400 volunteer members across six regions including the Southern Highlands, Campbelltown, Wollondilly, Camden, Central Illawarra, Shoalhaven and Wollongong.
Over the past thirty years, Peter’s steady presence has become a cornerstone of Conference operations. His focus on fostering unity among members, creating a supportive and respectful environment has led to the development of a strong, responsive and effective volunteer network.
“Peter is empathetic, patient, and committed. He is an active participant in direct charitable service, conducting home visits and welfare support while also being a mentor – helping members to develop their talents, capabilities, and spiritual charisms.”
Kelly McCrohon, Schools & Youth Engagement Officer, St Vincent de Paul
Community is an extension of family
Peter’s extraordinary contribution to St Vincent de Paul can be felt by many in our community through places like Creative Space, the Bowral Youth Refuge, Southern Highlands Homeless Services and specialised Domestic Violence Services – as well as supporting 700 people through the distribution of $147,000 in food and material assistance in the Southern Highlands last year.
“To me, community is an extension of family. It’s very important to take part and get to know your community, your neighbours and lend a hand where you can.” Peter said.
“People come to us when they need help, when they are struggling to make ends meet, put food on the table or stay in accommodation. We go out to them and distribute whatever means we have and do what we can to offer compassionate and constructive help to improve their situation. Volunteering gives you a great sense of pride and responsibility.”
Jenny Bott, Chair of the Southern Highlands Community Foundation said;
“Peter epitomises a Highlands Hero for us. He’s shown great leadership, particularly in supporting and mentoring other volunteers. He has a keen sense of social responsibility and has had an enormous impact on our community locally as well as further afield. In a community like ours, where there is a disparate proportion of wealth that can sometimes mask the significant numbers of people in need, volunteers like Peter are critical in getting help to where it’s needed.”
Peter, emigrated to Australia from Ireland in 1970, as part of the ’10-pound pom’ scheme. After spending time in Sydney, where he raised his family and began volunteering at St Vincent de Paul, he moved to Mittagong in 2010.
A passionate advocate for social justice, known for his unwavering dedication, compassion, and leadership. His commitment to serving the community is marked by a deep sense of social responsibility, personal integrity, and spiritual conviction.
